The first precisely measured running tracks were built after 1850. Foot racing had become popular in England by the 17th century, when footmen would race and their masters would wager on the result. By the 19th century pedestrianism, as it was then called, had become very popular. A professional racer named Walter George set a record of 4:11.8 in 1886 that was not broken until 1915. The mile record accelerated in the 1930s, as newsreel coverage greatly popularized the sport, making stars out of milers such as Jack Lovelock of New Zealand and Glenn Cunningham of the United States, popularized by

Chariots of Fire. In the 1940s Swedes Arne Andersson and Gunder Haag lowered the record to just over four minutes (4:01.4) before racing was curtailed in the combatant countries during World War II.

Julie and I just returned from The Running Event in Austin, where we rekindled our relationship with Dick Beardsley and met Alberto Salazar, the two famous for the Duel in the Sun. Alberto was the last American before Meb to win New York. Dick finished second to Alberto by two seconds at the Duel in the Sun in Boston 1982. I urge all of you who love running and humanity to go to You Tube, search for “Beardsley Salazar Duel in the Sun,” and watch the first two clips: first the Duel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmzljrUrwKE, next Beardsley’s recollection of the race http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sC8A9TNRf5A. Then go to Wikipedia.com, search for “Dick Beardsley,” and read about his life, especially The Accident, and Addiction and Recoveryhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Beardsley . There were five hundred teary-eyed runners in the house this Wednesday night for the love of these two guys:
