Announcing the Arrival of the Asics 3020

April 30, 2010

Newly arrived in the store is the third iteration of the 3000-series shoe, and the first we have carried in the series: the 3020.  This technically superb product owes its heritage to the Empire, a shoe built on the same brialliant concept but doomed to fail because it didn’t have the same fit characteristics as close relatives in the line, the 2000 series and the Kayano.  I ran Comrades in 2008 in a pair of 3000s, cementing my belief that this is one of the best shoes made.

Women's Asics Gel 3020

Women's Asics Gel 3020

It has the fit and cushioning of the Kayano, but is more stable owing to the length of the medial post and an extension of midsole material past the first metatarsal joint to delay a property of gait called windlass mechanism, greatly assisting runners who are late-stage over-pronators.  This is the only shoe I know of made to help runners who have that property of gait.

The shoe held up over the 56-mile course from Durban to Pietermaritzburg in the African heat.  I started the race with 500 miles on them.  If you like the 2150 or Kayano, I suggest trying the 3020.  This is a Gold Account shoe you will only be able to purchase at specialty stores like Sound Runner.

CHECK IT OUT!

Train to Manage Pain with Tart Cherries

Adding tart cherries to your training routine may be a powerful way to relieve post-exercise pain. A recent study by Oregon Health and Sciences University revealed that runners who drank cherry juice prior to and on the day of a long-distance relay had significantly less muscle pain following the race. Even gold medalist Bryan Clay, the World’s Greatest Athlete, has incorporated cherries into his training diet to help prepare for upcoming decathlon championship events.

Now you can train to manage post-exercise pain with cherries by following the Red Recovery Routine, developed by sports dietitian Leslie Bonci, M.P.H., R.D., LDN, CSSD.

Outdoor Retailers

January 23, 2010

Julie, Preston, and I are in Salt Lake City, where at this time each year we attend the Outdoor Retailer’s Winter Market at the Salt Palace.  Here gather most of the manufacturers and the stores who buy from them to preview what’s coming for Fall 2010 and write orders.  Working from our business forecast for 2010, we commit a significant share of our working capital for the the year, hoping we have chosen well the things our customers will need eight months from now.

We stay in a small time-share just off Temple Square in the heart of Salt Lake City.  Less than half a mile from Temple Square is Canyon Road, with a trail leading up and out of the city into the foothills of the Wasatch Range.  There has not been fresh snow for several days, so the surface is compact.

Where On South Beach?

January 8, 2010

Julie and I are staying in one of the 1940s-vintage Art-Deco hotels on Ocean Drive, at the north end of Lummus Park in South Beach, directly across the street from a superb running trail of sand.  The highest form of expression of the Tropical Deco movement in architecture is found here in south Miami Beach.

Mc Alpine Hotel on Ocean Drive, Miami Beach

Excellent examples of this kind of architecture are also found in Las Vegas and Los Angeles.  After a run down the beach to the south end of the island, we ran back through the interior neighborhoods built in the 1930s and 1940s, then sipped coffee at a cafe on Espanola Way.
