Runner’s Rule #6 A & B

January 10, 2010

What I like about this “rule book” is that, at least so far, I’ve broken the rules…but I am  learning, as I get older, to follow some of them.

#6A…”Have mercy on the slow.” Be courteous when running with others who are slower than you…particularly if you’re running at their invitation.I tell this to people all the time. People have free will, if they ask you to run with them…that means that they WANT to run with you.  Case in point, (and I’m not saying that I am faster than Bob). When Bob and I met many years ago and starting running together, he got very frustrated because I wouldn’t slow down.

All he wanted to do was spend time with me/run with me. I kept thinking, “I can’t run slower”…I was wrong. Slow down and enjoy the time together except of course…#6B…when you’re racing!

Runners in Statuary

January 9, 2010

After finding the terrific image of Mercury on a web site named Flicker, I looked for photographs of statues of runners.  And there are many!  One of the best and best-known is this statue Julie and I have seen of a runner breaking the imaginary tape in Stanley Park in Vancouver, B.C. :

The Runner

The statue of Harry Winston Jerome is a memorial to his life as a Canadian track and field runner who broke many world records and competed in the 1960, 1964 and 1968 Summer Olympics.   He won gold medals in the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games and the 1967 Pan American Games.

A Runner’s Paradise

January 8, 2010

South Beach is a runner’s paradise because of the quality of the running surface.

South Beach - A Runner's Causeway

Although not easily seen in the photograph, runners dominate the upper beach.  The sand is perfectly flat.  Composed of a mixture of quartz, coral sand, and shell particles, the material compacts into a firm, resiliant surface comparable in morning firmness to the lower trails around supply pond.  At the lower tip of the barrier island is the entrance to the Port of Miami.  Lucky  yours truly  arrives at the beach in the following picture, with downtown Miami in  the background.

Where On South Beach?

January 8, 2010

Julie and I are staying in one of the 1940s-vintage Art-Deco hotels on Ocean Drive, at the north end of Lummus Park in South Beach, directly across the street from a superb running trail of sand.  The highest form of expression of the Tropical Deco movement in architecture is found here in south Miami Beach.

Mc Alpine Hotel on Ocean Drive, Miami Beach

Excellent examples of this kind of architecture are also found in Las Vegas and Los Angeles.  After a run down the beach to the south end of the island, we ran back through the interior neighborhoods built in the 1930s and 1940s, then sipped coffee at a cafe on Espanola Way.

On the Wings of Mercury

January 8, 2010

Julie and I spent a wonderful evening, and have awakened to a spectacular morning on South Beach, photos to follow.  Going through the airports and flight yesterday, my thoughts turned to Mercury, the winged messenger of Roman mythology, who really should be the pagan god of runners.  Mercury never went through a metal detector, body scan, or pat-down as he completed his swift rounds in support of trade and commerce.  Nor will Julie and I face any security measures as we go out for our run on the beach.  The freedom and joy of running rise in continually sharper contrast to the limitations imposed on modern society, air travel for example.

Mercury, the Winged Messenger

Check out the back-kick!  Jesse, you have met your match.  Mercury may be a bit of a late-stage over-pronator, but he will be entering this year’s Branford Road Race, and will wear bib #1.

Speaking of Plantar Fasciitis

January 5, 2010

Continuing the discussion of things plantar, plantar fasciitis is the most common foot condition among runners.  It is a painful irritation of the plantar fascia, a thick fibrous band of tissue originating on the bottom surface of the calcaneous (heel bone) and extending along the sole of the foot towards the five toes.  The term “fasciitis” might be considered a misnomer, as medical studies of the tissue do not necessarily demonstrate inflammation.  Plantar fasciitis reportedly occurs in two million Americans a year and 10% of the population over a lifetime.  It is commonly associated with long periods of work-related weight bearing.  The pain is usually felt on the underside of the heel, and is usually most intense with the first steps of the day.  Another symptom commonly recognized among sufferers of plantar fasciitis is knee pain, especially among runners.  One cause of the irritation to the plantar fascia is the rocking motion of the foot occuring with each foot-strike, when the foot pronates below the ankle to attenuate impact, inducing an over-use condition in the plantar fascia.  At any rate, it hurts.

Speaking of Twilight…

January 5, 2010

A fantastic time to run, twilight comes twice a day: between dawn and sunrise, and between sunset and dusk.  Sunlight scattered in the upper atmosphere illuminates the lower atmosphere, and the earth’s surface is neither completely lit nor completely dark.  The sun, below the horizon, is not visible.  Twilight is defined according to the declination of the center of the sun below the horizon.  There are three established and widely accepted periods of twilight: civil twilight (brightest), when a headlamp is useful for others to see you; nautical twilight, when dark falls on the forest floor; and astronomical twilight (darkest), when a headlamp is obligatory for forward progress.
