I was remiss in not getting this to the blog sooner…I’d like to say it got lost in the holiday shuffle, although that may be true…it’s a horrible excuse! Nurturing these young athletes is critical…my apologies Hannah…congratulations. Erin, thanks for sharing this…call me anytime, I would love to talk to you about suggestions to keep Hannah engaged and enjoying the sport of running!
Hi Julie- I thought that you might be interested in knowing that Hannah recently competed in the USATF Junior Olympic National Cross Country Championship in Reno, Nevada on Dec 12th. She had a GREAT time and ran fairly well too. She surpassed her goal (top 100) and came in 75th (top 25 percent) out of greater than 250 racers in the midget division. She competed unattached and truly had a ball. She just loves this competition. After the holidays I would love to talk to you about how to nurture her passion and talent to create opportunities for her to explore. What do you know about local track and field clubs? Hope your holidays are bright. Erin Springhorn
By the way Hannah was part of the SoundRunner Summer running camp that we present in conjunction the Branford Parks and Rec…dates will be ironed out soon!

Polyester Fiber
Greenwashing is a term increasingly used in the oudoor industry to describe the unjustified appropriation of environmental virtue by a company, an industry, a government, a politician or even a non-government organization to create a pro-environmental image, sell a product or a policy, or to try and rehabilitate their standing with the public and decision makers after being embroiled in controversy. Corp-Watch defines greenwash as “the phenomena of socially and environmentally destructive corporations, attempting to preserve and expand their markets or power by posing as friends of the environment.”
Runners make natural environmentalists. Runners were quick to become aware of sustainability issues, and are just as quick to identify complications with the arguments. I give one example today: the debate over the use of sustainable materials in running apparel. Most technical clothing is manufactured from polyester, nylon, and lycra blends. These synthetic fibers are formed by extruding filaments from a chemical emulsion, spawning environmental concerns. But because the fibers are smooth, they are generally soft to the touch.

Wool Fiber
Merino wool, on the other hand, is a natural fiber with good moisture and thermal regulating properties. And it is environmentally friendly. The problem is that it is still somewhat scratchy to the touch because the fiber has scales. The wool is washed (scoured) to remove grease (unrefined lanolin), vegetable matter and other impurities which gather in the wool from the range, feedlot, or shearing floor. A set of rakes moves the fleece through a series of scouring tubs of soap and water. Impurities can weigh from 30 to 70 percent of raw (unscoured) fleece. The washing solution make it soft to the touch but spawns environmental concerns.
What is the right thing for the planet? I don’t pretend to know the answer, but I know that being a runner will help me think about these questions carefully and discuss them with customers thoughtfully.

Train to Manage Pain with Tart Cherries
Adding tart cherries to your training routine may be a powerful way to relieve post-exercise pain. A recent study by Oregon Health and Sciences University revealed that runners who drank cherry juice prior to and on the day of a long-distance relay had significantly less muscle pain following the race. Even gold medalist Bryan Clay, the World’s Greatest Athlete, has incorporated cherries into his training diet to help prepare for upcoming decathlon championship events.
Now you can train to manage post-exercise pain with cherries by following the Red Recovery Routine, developed by sports dietitian Leslie Bonci, M.P.H., R.D., LDN, CSSD.

The promise of improved efficiency through increased sensitivity is the force behind the natural running movement. My caveat paraphrases Thomas Hobbes: running in the natural state without adequate thought and preparation could be nasty, brutish, and short. We don’t have data on the podiatric problems of primitive people who are footwear minimalists, but we do know what force is, and we know that all impact must be attenuated with every footstrike, and can only be accomplished by the running surface, footwear, and musculo-skeletal system. Natural running essentially eliminates footwear as a source of impact attenuation. So this kind of running needs to be incorporated gradually into a training program and done on a soft surface to minimize the chance of injury and maximize the benefits of improved sensitivity.

A fascinating four-day show wraps up today. There was no product revolution this year in the outdoor industry, but I think three trends of importance to runners are worth emphasizing:
There is far more good product available than the industry can get to the consumer. Brands both major and minor are using the same sources of technical materials in their products, and the materials are truly incredible. The overall quality of design is very high. But it does no good for a brand to have a great product if they can’t get it made. Julie and I see many of the wonderful niche brands merging with larger companies. It is the only way they can compete for materials at a reasonable price, and factory time to make their goods.
Enter the era of design, exit the age of technology. Gone is the day we would wear a plain, synthetic shirt that harbored odor just to have the benefit of its moisture wicking properties. All good fabrics breathe, regulate moisture, control temperature, and block sun, wind, and rain. In fact, it’s increasingly difficult to perceive physically the benefit of higher technology in fabric. And if you can’t feel it, you won’t pay for it. Performance is now taken for granted. Design matters. What you see in the store next fall has to be as good as anything from the runways of Paris in terms of color, finish, hand, fabrication, and fit.
Brands are crossing distribution channels. This movement may not yet be at 5K pace, but it is at tempo. As our customers have known for a long time, brands like Cloudveil, 66 Degrees North, and Snow Angel cross over easily for certain running applications. Now, many brands like Icebreaker and Mountain Hardware are creating running-specific lines, while others like Lole and Isis tell an increasingly technical story with their beautifully-designed products. So the boundary between specialty running, other specialties, and lifestyle is increasingly blurry, all to the benefit of runners.
Preston and I are on our way to our last set of appointments, so I’ll sign off for now from Salt Lake City.

Julie, Preston, and I are in Salt Lake City, where at this time each year we attend the Outdoor Retailer’s Winter Market at the Salt Palace. Here gather most of the manufacturers and the stores who buy from them to preview what’s coming for Fall 2010 and write orders. Working from our business forecast for 2010, we commit a significant share of our working capital for the the year, hoping we have chosen well the things our customers will need eight months from now.
We stay in a small time-share just off Temple Square in the heart of Salt Lake City. Less than half a mile from Temple Square is Canyon Road, with a trail leading up and out of the city into the foothills of the Wasatch Range. There has not been fresh snow for several days, so the surface is compact.

Few know that I have been immortalized, mid-stride, in Bronze. The informed realize I am not sufficiently upright to be considered in excellent form:

Bob, le Courrier
An increasing number of you who see this blog may not recongnize the author. Here is Bob in extroverted state:

Bob the Extrovert in South Beach
There is another side of me, the more introverted, quiet Bob, composer of sober, thoughtful blogs:

Bob, Introverted, Still in South Beath
This is the more quiet, more shy, more introverted me, still the object of the artist’s runner. (Don’t believe any of the foregoing.)
