Runner’s Rule Book

November 18, 2009

As you have read Bob and I went to Austin for The Running Event. Not only were there conferences, hobnobbing with “go fasts,” but there was an EXPO…always fun. I stopped off at the Rodale Booth and picked up a new book: The Runner’s RULE BOOK-Everything a runner needs to know-and then some. I started reading through this and discovered that there were some great “rules” we should be reminded of.

RULE 1: HAVE FUN! Wow, this is a tough one, but one I think I am doing pretty well with…finally. Age and experience hopefully get all of us to this point…Don’t get me wrong, I have always LOVED running. Sometimes, however, I made it work instead of fun…now, fun is the only thing I have, no matter whom I run with or where I run.

Nobody Left to Run With

November 16, 2009

Got to the store Saturday morning for the 8:00 run, only to find myself by myself for the first time in perhaps eight years.  So I started for Pawson Point with the blues on my mind: there’s Nobody Left to Run With anymore http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oT0ZFwgsu0.    But Bill Datre came along just past the Indian Neck Fire House, and Linda Kowalski joined in on the way back at the Owenego.  Then I found this clip on You Tube, and all was right with the world.

FUNCTION, FASHION, AND HELPING THE EARTH

tagI have been looking at these bags for several years at Outdoor Retailer and have thought what a great idea. Merle takes remnants makes these very cool bags…she converts yoga mats and the webbing remnants are from CHACO…so for those of you who like to be matchy matchy…buy a pair of CHACO sandals and an OlovesM bag. Merle’s bags are in both Branford and Madison…they will be in Old Saybrook as well!

The following is an excerpt from Merle’s website.

The OlovesM.com bags are a zero waste creation, made from un-used material that companies were going to throw away. I have given them refuge for their remnants, and created the OlovesM Bag Line. Enjoy your bag and remember: You are using a bag that IS making a difference!

Duel in the Sun

November 13, 2009

Julie and I just returned from The Running Event in Austin, where we rekindled our relationship with Dick Beardsley and met Alberto Salazar, the two famous for the Duel in the Sun.  Alberto was the last American before Meb to win New York.  Dick finished second to Alberto by two seconds at the Duel in the Sun in Boston 1982.  I urge all of you who love running and humanity to go to You Tube, search for “Beardsley Salazar Duel in the Sun,” and watch the first two clips: first the Duel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmzljrUrwKE, next Beardsley’s recollection of the race http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sC8A9TNRf5A.  Then go to Wikipedia.com, search for “Dick Beardsley,” and read about his life, especially The Accident, and Addiction and Recoveryhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Beardsley .  There were five hundred teary-eyed runners in the house this Wednesday night for the love of these two guys: Beardsley Salazar

Cooking Light Magazine

I love this magazine! I always get lots of great information and wonderful recipes from it…

As I perused the mag today on our way back from Austin I came away with some tidbits…and they are RIGHT and you know it!!

What you eat after a workout matters! No matter what time of day you exercise, the key is to follow up with meals that combine protein, which helps your muscles recover, and carbohydrates, which replenish energy stores. For best results, eat within 30 to 60 minutes after exercise, when muscles are most receptive. During this window, an increase in enzyme activity makes the body more efficient at storing glucose for energy and building protein in fatigued muscles.

I know how busy everyone is, so I hope you don’t mind me sharing…and I hope (if you have time), you will share, if you have had some other experiences other than what I have posted here!

WELCOME Bob’s Lane

November 13, 2009

For those of you who are familiar with Bob’s writing style and miss it…he’s back! I have finally convinced him that people love when he writes, because his writing style is detailed and informative. Unlike me…Bob contemplates exactly what  to say and says it in a very beautiful way.

FYI! Bob's the one in the yellow on the far left in the back row. This was a picture of Bob and the rest of us after we finished the Reach the Beach Relay in September.

November 10, 2009

I am in Austin for the 3rd Annual Running Event, so I will miss the runs in the stores. I do plan on running on Saturday. I had thought I would run from the Old Saybrook store at 8 a.m….any takers?
